Prep blog: Elk Grove baseball stays alive, beats Franklin

Published: Monday, May. 19, 2014 - 9:05 pm

With big contributions from its ace, top hitters and defense, Bee No. 1 Elk Grove High School kept its season alive and kicking.

The Thundering Herd beat Delta Valley Conference rival No. 5 Franklin 6-1 on Monday night at blustery Sacramento City College in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I-North elimination game in maintaing their championship repeat hopes.

Two days after falling to Rocklin 4-3 to halt an 18-game winning streak, the state-ranked No. 3 Thundering Herd (24-5) resembled their old selves. Junior left-handed ace Chris Martin tossed a complete-game four hitter with five strikeouts to move to 7-2 and the defense was strong.

Elk Grove plays the loser of Tuesday's Rocklin-Davis winner's bracket game on Thursday at Sac City. Rocklin will go with ace Logan Webb against Davis ace Matt Trask in what shapes up to be a terrific showdown.

Elk Grove junior infielder Carlos Moseley doubled in Ty Madrigal in the first inning and later scored on an error for a 2-0 lead as Elk Grove scored three quick runs. Moseley had two doubles and scored twice. Senior teammate Derek Hill had three hits and drove in a run.

Franklin (20-11) bows out but not after impacting the tournament. It bounced Bee No. 2 Pleasant Grove and received standout pitching all season from ace Cameron Keup, who took the loss Monday. A strong core returns next season for Franklin and coach Bryan Kilby, including standout junior shortstop Hank LoForte, who had two hits on Monday.

Jordan Estes, another junior, had two hits for Franklin, which won the D-I North title two years ago and lost in the finals to Elk Grove last season.

The Herd has the pitching depth to make a run at their eighth North title under coach Jeff Carlson since 2002 with Ty Madrigal, Cody Barnes, Austin Del Chiaro, Skuler Quam and others.
