Bee photographers win nine awards

Sacramento Bee photographers won nine awards in the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association’s Annual News Photography and Video Competition.

Jose Luis Villegas earned a first-place award in the News Picture category for a collection of pictures on the crime-troubled Lemon Hill neighborhood.

Randy Pench placed second in the category.

Renee C. Byer’s earned a first-place award in the Portrait-Personality Photography category with a picture of Jeff Rabe displaying his own photo booth picture in his pocket as he promoted his business The Traveling Photo Booth at a wedding show in the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria.

Villegas placed second in the same category.

Also honored with Awards of Excellence: Randall Benton in Spot News Photography, Paul Kitagaki Jr. for Feature Picture, Byer for Feature Photography and Kitagaki for Feature Photography.

Villegas placed third in the competition for the News Photographer of the Year. The Ken McLaughlin News Photographer of the Year was Justin Sullivan of Getty Images.
