Re "Is democracy in a long-run decline?" (Viewpoints, May 21): David Brooks is correct to say that the world should be looking to America for their model of a working democracy and what is needed is "a strategy to make democracy dynamic again." He seeks an idea. He has discovered that America has a deficit of misdirected money and of ideas smothered in technological trivia.

Our solution lies in the crib where all babies lie, where first cries bring food or affection, where problem-solution, cause-effect--the bases for academic success and democratic thinking--first find intellectual expression. There's no academic gap in the crib. All babies are basically students and citizens in the crib regardless of economic or social status. No gap there.

If we would nurture democratic dynamics and save our children, we might look to where our babies are before we try to fashion where we want them to be.
