Looking to relieve stress? You might want to try mindful meditation

You may remember us chatting about mindfulness a couple of times in Healthy Choices. Mindfulness, as in meditation and stress reduction.

It turns out researchers are finding that mindfulness meditation – focusing on only the breath as it goes in and out for 20 to 40 minutes – helps ease Attention Deficit Disorder, too.

Makes sense, since the practice acts like a little sponge scrubbing away cobwebs from your frontal lobe. That’s the part of the brain that gets overloaded by stimuli.

Good to know, since we all get a little overloaded, or overwhelmed, now and then.

By the way, Gayle Wilson, whom we’ve written about here, is starting up another of her eight-week series of once-a-week mindfulness classes. Wilson teaches the certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction classes (or MBSR) developed at the University of Massachusetts hospital and used by Harvard University.

Here’s what Dr. Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA medical school says about MBSR: “It can help to disentangle our minds from ruminative thoughts, repetitive destructive emotions and impulsive and addictive behaviors.”
