Re "Memorial Day ceremonies planned for Merced County" (Capitol & California, May 22): Wikipedia describes Memorial Day as a day of remembering men and women who died while serving and Veterans Day as celebrating the service of all U.S. military veterans. As a surviving naval submarine veteran, son of a veteran, grandson of two veterans, nephew of three veterans and brother of another surviving veteran, I do not believe anyone will deny my right to address the difference between these two days on behalf of my family. None of our family died in combat. Several were wounded in mind and body and carried those wounds to their graves. They all knew they were lucky compared to the those who never came back. The family veterans are all gone except for my brother and I. In our minds, everyone has graduated from Veterans Day to Memorial Day. We know that soon we will be rejoining our late family veterans. We will want to be remembered.
