Memorial Day weekend is a time to honor men and women who died in military service, and it also marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Below are some picks for commemorative ceremonies as well as festivals and fairs that celebrate our region.

On Saturday, the 16th Annual Memorial Day and Avenue of Flags Ceremony will take place starting at 10 a.m. at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks.

On Sunday, The Vietnam Veterans of America will hold the 15th Annual “Reading of the Names” at Capitol Park, 15th and L streets, Sacramento. The reading begins at 7 a.m. and a ceremony honoring veterans begins at noon.

On Monday there are numerous ceremonies in our region honoring veterans. Look here for a full list of Sacramento area Memorial Day commemorations.

The Sacramento Music Festival - formerly known as the Dixieland Jazz Jubilee - has been a Memorial Day weekend tradition for more than four decades. The event runs through Monday and features an eclectic mix of rock, jazz, blues, zydeco and other musical genres. Here’s a festival schedule and map and here are five must-see jazz acts.

In Marysville this weekend it’s the 81st annual Marysville Stampede, which celebrates our region’s Western heritage. The event features a cattle drive and rodeo.

The 78th annual Sacramento County Fair is at Cal Expo through Monday. Visitors will get to see lots of livestock, racing pigs and plenty of rides, entertainment and, of course, fried food. Kids under 12 get in free.

The Greek Food Festivalis taking place in Roseville this weekend with lots of Greek specialty dishes, including a full range of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

And in Davis Saturday it’s the fifth year for the Tour de Cluck. The annual event, a bike tour of local chicken coops, benefits Davis Farm to School and Yolo Farm to Fork.
