Bicyclists share the responsibility

Re "A ride of silence" (Page B3, May 24): The average rate of cyclist injuries in the Sacramento area is nothing short of frightening and tragic. However, it has become increasingly clear that many cyclists either never learned bicycle rules-of-the-road, or choose to ignore them.

According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles: Bicycle riders on public roads have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, and are subject to the same rules, and must obey all traffic. Cyclists need to remember that car drivers are expecting you to comply with the rules, but if cyclists choose not to, they are voluntarily subjecting themselves to grave injury.

All bicycle riders would be well-advised to review the bicycle rules-of-road in the California Driver Handbook.
