Plastic bags aren't the problem

Re "Ban single-use plastic bags; they need to go" (Forum, May 18): The article by Mariel Garza on why single-use plastic bags must go was written in an ocean of emotion. It didn't spell out all the problems with paper bags and how much they pollute the water and have a big carbon footprint.

Friends of the California Current have conducted 70 surveys over the last four years in cities where the ban was passed, and the percentage of re-usable bags varies from a low of 10 percent to a high of 50 percent. In other words, the ban on plastic bags won't cause most people to bring usable bags to the store.

Why pass a ban if the only consequence is a huge increase in paper bag use?
