Sacramento State baseball team opens NCAA playoffs at Cal Poly on Friday

Sacramento State, making its first NCAA Division I baseball appearance in school history, will playCal Poly in its first-round regional playoff at 6 p.m. on Friday in San Luis Obispo.

The Hornets (39-22) are seeded No. 4 and Cal Poly (45-10) No. 1 in the four-team, double-elimination regional that also includes West Coast Conference champion Pepperdine (39-16), the No. 3 seed, and No. 2 Arizona State (33-22), the third place finisher in the Pac-12 Conference.

Cal Poly, which as the Big West Conference champion earned an automatic bid, is hosting a regional for the first time in its 20 years in Division I.

The Hornets received the automatic berth by beating Utah Valley 10-3 in the Western Athletic Conference tournament championship game Sunday in Mesa, Ariz.

Sac State received one of the 31 automatic bids in the 64-team tournament that features 16 regionals.

Though they are viewed as underdogs, the Hornets have a 7-6 regular-season win over Pac-12 champion Oregon State (42-12), which earned the overall No. 1 national seed.
