49ers add former Stanford LB Chase Thomas after waiving two players

Published: Tuesday, May. 27, 2014 - 4:34 pm

The 49ers on Tuesday tweaked their roster, waiving both tackle Luke Marquardt, who re-fractured his foot last week, and outside linebacker Morgan Breslin, who was signed as a free agent following the draft. The team filled those spots with former Stanford linebacker Chase Thomas and former USC tight end Kevin Greene, both of whom were tryout participants in the team’s recent rookie minicamp.

Breslin, who played at USC, was sidelined with a hip injury last year and did not fully participate in the 49ers’ rookie minicamp over the weekend due to a lingering sports hernia. He was placed on the waived/non-football injury list. Both he and Marquardt could be brought back and placed on the NFI list and injured reserve list respectively. Foot injuries have kept Marquardt out of action for the last two years. He will be examined this week and likely will have another surgery to repair the foot.

Thomas (6-3, 242) played for Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio at Stanford. He originally signed with the Saints last season and spent time with the Raiders, Falcons and Packers as well. Thomas played in 53 games and had 229 tackles, 50 1/2 tackles for loss, 27 1/2 sacks, nine forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and two interceptions for the Cardinal. Former Stanford teammates tackle Jonathan Martin and linebacker Shayne Skov also are on San Francisco’s 90-man roster.

Greene (6-4, 255) played both tight end and defensive end at USC. He will be a tight end for the 49ers, one of several hoping to land a backup role on the team behind Vernon Davis and second-year player Vance McDonald.
