ScholarShare, California’s college savings 529 investment plan, is part of a nationwide effort Thursday to promote the advantages of saving for college.

As part of National 529 College Savings Day, California’s Scholar Share plan is hosting an online sweepstakes contest to give away $2,500 to a family for future college expenses.

A 529 is a tax-advantaged investment plan designed to encourage parents and others to save for their children’s future higher education costs. It’s named after Section 529 of the IRS code and is administered in almost every state by state agencies and other organizations.
