Truckee man charged with elder abuse and murder of his mother

Published: Wednesday, May. 28, 2014 - 1:28 pm

A 61-year-old Truckee man has been arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and murder in the death of his 88-year-old mother.

Truckee Police officers responded Tuesday evening to a report of a possibly deceased person at the Sierra Village Apartments on Martis Valley Road in Truckee.

Upon arrival, they confirmed the death of Nellie Mulligan, who shared an apartment with her son, David Jenkins.

Mulligan’s physical state and living conditions were poor and suggested neglect, according to the police report. There was no obvious cause of death and neglect is suspected to be a factor, the report said.

Jenkins was interviewed by police detectives and later booked at the Nevada County Jail on two felony charges of cruelty to elders with great bodily injury and second-degree murder.

The two are thought to have lived in Truckee for approximately one year. Mulligan, who moved to Truckee from Florida, was not under the care of a doctor or Home Hospice, according to the report.

The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is pending. Anyone with information is asked to call the Truckee Police Department investigations unit, 530-550-2334.
