The shot put competition during next month’s USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be contested on the grounds of the State Capitol, meet organizers announced today.

Shot-put qualifying for men and women will be between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, followed by the finals between 4 and 6 p.m.

Sacramento State engineering students will build a concrete ring near the sidewalk along 10th Street. Typically, the men’s national title is won with a throw beyond 70 feet, while the top women throw between 62 and 66 feet.

The Capitol steps will provide a built-in viewing section, and meet organizers said grandstands will be set up outside the throwing sector.

There will be no admission to watch the shot put competition.

The remainder of the championships will be June 26-29 at Hornet Stadium.
