Elk Grove on the GO

What: Elk Grove’s GO Fest invites residents to run, walk, pedal or roll at the fitness-inspired event. There will be a 2-mile fun run/walk and 12-mile bike cruise along with nutrition demonstrations and workshops. After the activities, there will be a “cheat meal” and live music. The Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates will provide complimentary bike valet service.

Where: 8289 Longleaf Drive, Elk Grove.

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost: Free.



Dog day at the park

What: Pups in the Park celebrates all things canine. Assorted Sacto MoFo mobile food trucks will be selling their wares at Sacramento’s McKinley Park, with a percentage of sales benefiting the Front Street animal shelter. Also planned are a 1K Pup Promenade and Doggy Costume Contest. There will also be carnival-style games, photo booths, agility demonstrations and more.

Where: 601 Alhambra Blvd., Sacramento.

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cost: Free admission; promenade and costume contest, $20.

Symphonic music in Carmichael

What: The Sacramento Valley Symphonic Band Association presents two days of performances at the annual Carmichael Park Community Band Festival, one of the largest community band festivals in California for more than 20 years. Families are invited to bring picnics and lawn chairs to the free event.

Where: 5750 Grant Ave., Carmichael.

When: noon to 6 p.m. today, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Mermaids on parade

What: The boardwalk in Old Sacramento will be filled with parading mermaids, mermen, pirates and sea creatures during the fourth annual Sacramento Promenade of Mermaids. Prizes will be awarded for best costume in adult and children’s categories.

Where: The parade will start at the Old Sacramento boardwalk near the Rio City Cafe.

When: 1 p.m. (noon for check-in and last-minute parade registration).

Cost: Free admission for spectators. $5 for day-of-parade parade registrants. Parade participants do not have to register, but must do so to be eligible for prizes.



Library hosts book fair

What: The Sacramento Public Library is partnering with Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books, to host a Scholastic Book Fair at Sacramento’s Central Library. Book sale proceeds will be used to provide prize books to participants in of the library’s Paws to Read summer reading program for children.

Where: 828 I St., Sacramento.

When: Noon to 4 p.m.

Cost: Free admission.
