Sloppy statistics

Re "California's living costs hit the poor" (Page A2, June 1): There's nothing more irritating than having someone use a sloppy calculator to make a point. The CNN calculator Dan Walters uses to compare Austin to Sacramento notes that housing costs are substantially higher here, some 34 percent higher.

However, looking at actual statistics, I found that housing costs are, in fact, higher in Austin. The median rent in Sacramento is $1,150 for the city, and $1,250 for the region. In Austin, the median rent for Austin is $1,350, and $1,300 for the Austin region. (We can assume that low-income residents will be renting rather than buying.)

Now Austin may have many virtues, but cheap rent isn't one of them.
