Re Reaction to rescue of soldier some call deserter is mixed (Page A10, June 2): There are no words to express the joy when one's son returns from battle or captivity. That being said, I guess we now know that the U.S. will negotiate with terrorists. This puts a price on the American soldier and incentivizes the Taliban to capture more of them.

Since we got one guy and gave up five of theirs in return, I suppose this swap brought to light that either the value of a terrorist's life is only worth one-fifth the value of an American's life or they are far superior negotiators than this administration.

The guys remaining at Gitmo are the hardcore guys - the ones who will return to the battlefield against Americans in a heartbeat. Why did we have to return five?

Also, President Obama said no American soldier will be left behind. I guess he already forgot about Benghazi. -- Will Carpentier, EL Dorado Hills
