Which Bay Area team will make it to the World Series?

Leading Off: Are Giants, A’s headed to Bay Bridge Series?

Published: Monday, Jun. 2, 2014 - 7:11 pm

This could be the year we finally get another Bay Bridge World Series, 25 years after the Loma Prieta earthquake struck Oct. 17, 1989, and turned the Fall Classic into a footnote.

Though it’s only the first week of June, enough baseball has been played to separate the contenders from the pretenders.

Come on, Cubbies fans, you know your team won’t even sniff at the playoffs. Over in the American League, it must be depressing to be a Tampa Bay Rays fan.

It’s quite the opposite here in Northern California, where fans are being spoiled this season. The A’s (35-22) have the best record in the A.L., second in the majors to the National League-leading Giants (37-20).

The A’s have the pitching (their 2.93 ERA is the best in the majors) and enough hitting (led by Josh Donaldson and Brandon Moss) to hold off the Angels and Rangers in the West and make a serious run at the World Series.

In the N.L. West, the Giants have a commanding 71/2-game lead over the Dodgers and look like they’re going to run away with the division title. Their 3.02 ERA is second-best in the N.L., and they are 17 games over .500 even though Pablo Sandoval was in a horrendous slump until mid-May.

Mark your calendars for a four-game series between the A’s and Giants from July 7-10, with the first two games in Oakland, followed by two in San Francisco.

We’re thinking it will be a World Series preview.
