Re "It's high time for state to manage its groundwater" (Opinion, June 2): The Bee paints a dire picture for the state's groundwater resources and rightfully so. What fails to get noticed are the success stories around the state, of which the Sacramento region is a prime example.

Our region has made groundwater a sustainable resource by collaborating via the Water Forum, Sacramento Groundwater Authority and Sacramento Central Groundwater Authority, as well as investing in projects and programs needed to recharge and store groundwater, expand surface water use in wet years and reduce water use through conservation.

The region's groundwater levels have been recovering for the last 15 years, and now this critical resource is helping to meet our needs during the drought, just as we envisioned.

The state has an interest in ensuring that groundwater is well managed, but this oversight must not hinder successful efforts, like the Sacramento region's, already occurring at local and regional levels.
