Re "Republicans are shameless hypocrites on veterans" (Viewpoints, June 3): In his desperation to shift some blame for the Veterans Affairs scandal, Bruce Maiman has neglected certain facts.
Since 9/11, the VA budget has increased 235 percent. Only State and Homeland Security had greater increases. A Congressional Budget Office report found that Iraq and Afghan veterans accounted for only 4 percent of health costs. However, in the past 4 1/2 years, $489 million was spent on conference room makeovers, administrators make salaries in 6 digits and the whole scandal surfaced because they wanted to look good enough to get thousands of dollars in bonuses.
There is nothing wrong with wanting efficiency and common sense in government, but Maiman seems to think we should just throw more money at a bureaucracy so there will be more to waste.
