Re "California's living costs hit the poor" (Dan Walters, June 1): As the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed regulations to curb greenhouse gases, California legislators were miles ahead, discussing how to invest California's cap-and-trade revenues.
As Dan Walters noted, housing is especially expensive in California and usually a family's highest expense. Wise investment of cap-and-trade revenue will not only reduce greenhouse gases, but also address issues Walters raised, helping people struggling to put roofs over their heads.
Building 15,000 affordable apartments near transit would reduce driving, while also reducing individuals' transportation costs, allowing residents to forgo cars and gasoline altogether, and lowering housing costs. Affordable-home builders can incorporate energy-efficiency features, further reducing costs for cash-strapped Californians by keeping utility bills low.
The nation's watching. We have the opportunity to show affordable homes near transit are one of the smartest GHG-reduction investments.
