Angel Foley and her dog Pickle walk alongside a pond in William Land Park on Monday afternoon. The pond is one of three that may receive upgrades sometime next year, after cuts to the parks department’s budget in 2008 eliminated funding for regular maintenance.

Sacramento will be flirting with 100 degree temperatures for the next couple of days.

The high on Wednesday was 97 degrees in Sacramento. That’s the forecast for the city on Thursday and Friday, too.

While that’s hot, the National Weather Service is not predicting the first 100-degree day of the year until the weekend. The forecast goes like this: 101 on Saturday, 101 on Sunday and 100 on Monday.

Government weather forecasters note that the majority of the heating on a hot day occurs between 9 a.m. and noon. That’s when the temperatures typically quickly stair-step 20 degrees.

On a 100-degree day in the Central Valley, it will usually be 90 degrees by noon.

So, early risers get the most out of their day when it comes to outdoor activity. The exception to that rule is a splash in a swimming pool, an activity best enjoyed when temperatures are peaking.

The detailed, 7-day forecast from the NWS for the Sacramento region:

Thursday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 97. South southeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.

Tonight: Clear, with a low around 59. West southwest wind 7 to 9 mph becoming south after midnight.
