This is part of a weekly feature in Home & Garden, highlighting ways residents can save water.
• Install a water-efficient clothes washer.
This is a big-ticket item for most households. But keep water efficiency in mind when washer shopping. The average top-loader uses 30 to 40 gallons per load. High-efficiency washers use less than 15 gallons. That’s a 15-gallon savings per load. If you do five loads a week, that adds up to nearly 4,000 gallons a year.
In addition, several local water agencies offer rebates on clothes washers. For a list, check out the links at www.BeWaterSmart.info.
