Trampling rights hurts democracy

Re "Marriage law changes a retreat for democracy" (Another View, June 1): Ballot initiatives that purposely withhold democratic rights for certain members of our democracy should not and cannot stand just because our voters have approved them. We are, as Bengs quotes, "a nation of laws, not of men," and we are a nation of laws that treat all of us equally, civilly, respectively.

Passing laws to deny certain cultural privileges, ceremonies and awards to a group of people you don't particularly like is not a democracy, and when unthinking and confused citizens pass such laws they need to be overturned. That's a sign of democracy expanding, not retreating.
