Re "Marriage law changes a retreat for democracy" (Forum, June 1): Thank you, Margaret A. Bengs, for your article. There are two items from your article that I would like to mention in this letter.
No matter what one's view of gay marriage, it can only be questioned why the governor and attorney general refused to carry out their duty and support the vote of millions of Californians who supported and passed Proposition 8. When did it become OK for elected officials to pick and choose what laws they will defend?
The second point I would like to mention is to ask why it is not OK to publicly support traditional marriage? Is it in the best interest of democracy to fire or just remove people from their jobs because they oppose gay marriage?
How much longer will people accept the trampling of democracy and our U.S. Constitution?
