Bait bike traps another, Sacramento police say

Published: Monday, Jun. 9, 2014 - 7:35 am

Sacramento police have arrested another person in connection with the department's use of a bait bike downtown.

Timothy S. Bectell, 40, was arrested in West Sacramento on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, grand theft and possession of stolen property in connection with the theft of a bike in downtown Sacramento.

So-called bait bikes are equipped by Sacramento police with GPS tracking devices. The bicycles are locked in place at various locations, and police officers are alerted when they are moved.

When the bike is taken, a signal is sent to the police, and the stolen bicycle is tracked. Police have hailed the use of the bait bikes as a great tool in stemming the tide of stolen bicycles in downtown and midtown.

In the latest incident, police said that officers rushed to the 100 block of Capitol Mall after being alerted that the bait bike had just been stolen about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The bike was traced across the river and officers converged on the area.

The bike was found not far from the Broderick boat ramp where Bectell and others were gathered.
