During the week of the Isla Vista shooting/stabbing deaths of six people, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to increase funding for the National Instant Criminal Background Checks System, enabling the inclusion of thousands of additional records of prohibited gun purchasers into the system which keeps felons and people with histories of serious mental illnesses and violence from purchasing guns.
Neither of our local congressmen from Nevada County, Doug LaMalfa or Tom McClintock, voted in support of the bill, in spite of overwhelmingly popular support for it. Over 90 percent of Americans support expanding background checks, including over 80 percent of gun owners and 74 percent of NRA members. We want more restrictions on the availability of weapons to people with a history suggesting risk of violence.
If we the people maintain a commitment to a government of, by and for the people, we must replace these two and any similarly unresponsive Congressmen.
