Re "Doubts persist on Bay Bridge job" (Page A1, June 8): Troublesome that with $6.5 billion, California gets a bridge riddled with defects, data manipulation; broken anchor rods; rusting on suspension cables; and cracking on welds along thick stiffeners. Despite all that, Caltrans' head declared that seismic safety for the bridge has been achieved.
With knowledge of ZPMC's lack of qualified welders and inspectors and bad working environment, a senior material contractor labeled ZPMC a high-risk company.
Defending for ZPMC, Caltrans chief engineer proclaimed ZPMC's automatic welding process produced excellent results, and no United States firm could have built as quickly a bridge so innovative and complex.
It should benefit taxpayers to learn of the standings of Caltrans officials on the methodology use of tax money, also to know if there exists a test procedure, verifying that the bridge is safe under huge seismic force.
