Re "Ruling challenges union power" (Editorials, June 11): The teachers union representative argues, according to your editorial, that the ruling in Vergara v. State of California will strip teachers of all protection so they can be fired at will. I never knew that state and federal labor laws protecting indiscriminate firing of employees did not apply to teachers. Other public employees, chiefly police and firefighters, have not seen fit to bargain for tenure rights that teachers enjoy, since these laws and union contracts provide ample protection against capricious terminations by employers. Why aren't teachers also protected by these laws?
