Sun & Soil Juice Company squeezes into midtown Sacramento

Midtown Sacramento on-the-go re-fueling options got a little healthier with the debut this week of Sun & Soil Juice Company.

Located at 1912 P St., the organic juice bar opened for business Monday in the 1,400-square-foot space that had been the longtime home of Spauldings Trophy Co. Since the new owners signed the lease in January, the site got a complete overhaul including the addition of a kitchen.

Situated next to a yoga studio, Sun & Soil already has found several devoted fans.

“We definitely know when yoga class lets out,” said co-owner Molly Brown.

Brown partnered with Tatiana Kaiser and Chris Ryan in their business, originally named The Cold Press Juicery. They were a finalist in the 2013 “Calling All Dreamers” contest sponsored by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership. At first, they had envisioned starting a mobile juice truck, but they switched their concept to a more conventional brick-and-mortar location.

“(Midtown) is a little more slow paced (than downtown), but has much better parking,” Brown said. “That’s important for our customers and for deliveries. We go through a ton of produce.”

All juices are cold-pressed raw, a process that squeezes out the most juice and nutrition from fresh vegetables and fruit. A typical 16-ounce carrot juice takes two pounds of carrots. Fifty pounds of spinach went into one batch of “Sweet Green,” which also contains apples, cucumbers, lime and ginger.

Using mostly locally sourced ingredients, the seasonal menu currently features 16 creative juice cocktails with such tantalizing names as “Beauty & the Beet” (carrot, beet, apple, ginger) and “Fennel Fetish” (grapefruit, pineapple, fennel, chia). Hearty smoothies feature some exotic twists on familiar favorites. For example, “Stress Free Strawberry” includes almond milk, banana, honey, hemp seed, licorice root and ashwagandha extract in addition to the signature fruit. Juice prices are $6 to $9 plus a $2 refundable bottle deposit. Smoothies are $7 for a 16-ounce serving. Juice shots, hot drinks and vegan snacks also are available.

In addition, Sun & Soil created a six-drink “one-day cleanse” package for $47 plus $12 bottle deposit.

“We’ve been testing recipes for a year and a half,” Kaiser said. “For sweeteners, we use apple juice, dates and honey; no processed sugar at all.

“Mostly, we want people to eat better and eat organic,” she added. “And give back to your body.”
