Re "Ruling challenges union power" (Editorial, June 11): I taught high school for three years in Idaho and 30 more in Orange County. California schools have lower expectations than those in Idaho.
In Idaho, 70 percent was considered passing. In California, it was 60 percent. I used the same text in both states. In Idaho, three students failed. In California, one third did. California students refused to do the assignments.
After retiring, I subbed for 14 more years in San Diego and Folsom-Cordova. I saw a student in San Diego make a pattern on the assessment test answer page without opening the test booklet. He would be promoted to high school even if he failed every class in 8th grade. His former teacher was in his last year before retiring, and he had accomplished zero teaching. The first draft of a composition was still stapled to the wall for open house in September.
