Sacramento DA charges two suspects in Fruitridge killing as adults

Two juvenile suspects accused in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Fijian man in south Sacramento County this week were arraigned today in Sacramento Superior Court, according to authorities.

Elias R. Guevara, 17 and Rozco B. Gutierrez, 16, have been charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the death of Roy Ravana Jr. and the injury of his 21-year-old friend. Both suspects also face sentencing enhancements for allegedly committing the crimes on behalf of the Norteño criminal street gang, according to the District Attorney’s office.

The Sacramento Bee is naming the juveniles because they have been charged as adults.

Guevara and Gutierrez allegedly used three guns – a .30 caliber carbine semi-automatic rifle, a 9 mm handgun and a .357 handgun – in the attack at 48th Street and Baker Avenue, in the county’s Fruitridge area. Shell casings were found strewn across two blocks.

Ravana came to the United States from his native Fiji in 2012 to pursue better academic and athletic opportunities, according to his friends and family. In Sacramento, he played for the Sacramento Lions rugby club, and planned to move to Louisiana in the fall to attend college on a track and field scholarship, friends and family said.
