Yolo sheriff asks for patience after scathing report

Yolo County Sheriff-Coroner Ed Prieto called for patience Wednesday as he prepares to respond to a scathing grand jury report finding a years-long record of intimidation, harassment and nepotism.

The panel’s report, released Tuesday, blasted the longtime sheriff’s “Wild, Wild West” leadership, recommending a nine-point list of remedies while stopping short of calling for Prieto’s removal from office.

In a brief statement Wednesday, Prieto said he and his staff were still poring over the grand jury’s 11-page report and determining an appropriate response.

“Please understand we just recently received the report ourselves and my staff and I are in the process of trying to understand the opinions and conclusions,” the statement read, adding that the panel interviewed fewer than 10 percent of department members.

Jurors, in their report, said many of the sheriff’s employees interviewed were compelled to testify by power of subpoena.

Prieto said his office has 60 days to respond to the report, but made assurances that “we will make every effort to respond to it within that time frame or sooner.”

Prieto, 70, won a fifth term as Yolo County Sheriff on June 3. He ran unopposed as he had in his previous campaigns.
