A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run death of a motorcyclist last month in North Sacramento.

John Park was taken into custody Tuesday and booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident, according to a Sacramento Police Department news release.

The May 6 collision on Del Paso Boulevard near Frienza Avenue claimed the life of 19-year-old motorcyclist Evan McDonald. According to police, McDonald was northbound on Del Paso Boulevard approaching Frienza when a van, believed to have been driven by Park, entered the roadway. The vehicles collided, fatally injuring McDonald.

Immediately after the collision, Park allegedly pulled over, got out of the vehicle and left the scene on foot.

Police said video surveillance and eyewitnesses assisted investigators in identifying Park as the suspect. Detectives, working in conjunction with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office, obtained a warrant for Park’s arrest.

McDonald was an apprentice lineman with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. He was described by his supervisor as an outstanding young man who had landed his job with the utility through a pilot program targeting Grant High School students.

Anyone with information pertaining to the collision is asked to call the Police Department’s dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357, or text a tip to 274637. Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
