NBA announces summer league games; Kings open with Spurs

Published: Thursday, Jun. 12, 2014 - 12:27 pm

The Kings will open the NBA summer league in Las Vegas against the San Antonio Spurs on July 11 at 7 p.m. at Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus.

The Kings also will play Charlotte on July 13 at 3 p.m., also at Cox, and the D-League All-Stars on July 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Thomas & Mack Center.

After playing three games each, teams will be seeded for a tournament that will decide the 2014 champion. Each team is guaranteed five games.

Last year, the Kings lost their first four games and finished 1-5. They focused on learning a new system under first-year coach Michael Malone and used rookie guards Ben McLemore and Ray McCallum extensively. McLemore struggled with his shot and ballhandling and McCallum looked like the more NBA-ready of the two.

The Kings should be more competitive this summer with McCallum, McLemore and forward Derrick Williams, who has played three NBA seasons, among the players expected to participate.

Kings assistant Chris Jent coached the team last summer; Malone hasn’t announced who will coach the team this summer.
