Vergara: Relying on teachers for peer evaluation

Re "Judge rejects state laws on teacher tenure" (Page A1, June 11): The basis of teacher tenure lies in the tricky area of teacher evaluation. Evaluation is usually done by an overworked administrator, and the results can inadequate and sometimes capricious.

If school districts could work out a fair system of peer evaluation, the tenure issue would not be viewed so negatively by some. Teachers know, perhaps better than their administrators, who the good teachers are. If their input into the evaluation process was validated, teacher tenure would become less controversial.
