Concord-based specialty beverage retailer BevMo opened its new store today in midtown Sacramento.

A ribbon-cutting and various festivities accompanied the opening of doors at 9 a.m. at 17th and J streets. The 12,800-square-foot store opened in the longtime location of The Beat record store, which closed a year ago this month.

Various activities are scheduled throughout the weekend at the BevMo store, including giveaways, in-store tastings and wine/beer demonstrations.

Besides an extensive selection of wines, spirits and beers, the store stocks specialty food items, glassware, party supplies and bar/dinner table accessories.

The Beat closed its doors at the end of June 2013 after nearly 20 years at the corner of 17th and J streets. After getting notice that its lease would not be renewed, store operators tried unsuccessfully to find another brick-and-mortar site.

BevMo was founded in 1994 as “Beverages & More!”, and it re-branded its name as logo as “BevMo!” in 2001. The midtown store is the 10th in the Sacramento area. The chain has 152 outlets in California, Arizona and Washington.
