Tight end Vernon Davis, pictured against the Cardinals in a game last October, has hauled in 93 passes, including 18 touchdowns, for the 49ers the past two seasons.

Report: Vernon Davis a no show at minicamp

Will he or won’t he show up for today’s mandatory minicamp? Vernon Davis had been sending mixed signals, and as recently as last week he said he would take part in the 49ers’ three-day session. It turns out that the team’s tight end did not show up on time, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The 49ers’ first practice begins at 3 p.m. If Davis is not on hand, he’ll forfeit $11,575. He’ll forgo another $23,150 for the second day he misses and $34,730 for the third for a total of $69,455. He’s already forfeited a $200,000 workout bonus by not taking part in the team’s conditioning program in Santa Clara.

Of course, skipping June practices is not a huge deal for a long-time veteran like Davis. In fact, one could argue that his absence helps young tight ends like Vance McDonald and Derek Carrier, who will take more practice repetitions as a result. If the tight end -- Colin Kaepernick’s second-favorite target last year and his lone deep threat -- remains absent for training camp next month, then the holdout will become more serious.

Guard Alex Boone also is expected to miss this week’s session. I wrote about both absences in today’s Bee.
