Re "Lawmakers approve California budget with midnight deadline looming" (Capitol & California, June 15): United Way California Capital Region applauds the legislature for their leadership on this budget allocating $264 million to early learning and child development. This budget will have a positive impact on low-income children and their families. We work with 750 employers in Amador, El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties, and the need here is tremendous.

In Sacramento County, we are only serving 22 percent of eligible low-income children in pre-kindergarten. In Placer County, it's only 11 percent. This budget represents the largest early education investment in more than a decade, and will support United Way's efforts to ensure the children are reading at grade level by fourth grade.

While there is still a lot of work left, this is a strong first step toward the community where all children start school ready to learn. We urge Gov. Brown to sign this budget into law.
