Nana and Boppa were Texans for about one hot minute. I’m not exactly sure why or how it happened, but I know that Boppa was having to move around a bit – somehow involving the Navy, I think, to repay his medical school debts during the Korean War. ... They were in San Angelo, Texas, long enough to have two girls and for Boppa to open his first pediatrics practice. ... Maybe San Angelo is where the Texas Cake recipe is from. Is it because it is enormous, like the state of Texas? The similarities end there. I have no other ideas why this cake might be labeled as a “Texas Cake.”

The lavender typically used for cooking is the one from Provence. ... This is also the type of lavender you’ll normally find in the farmers market, or bottled on the shelf. I’ve featured it today in making a scented sugar. I’ve already used this sugar to make lemonade and to enhance the sugar flavor when coating the rim of a glass with sugar. Both times the drinks had an added depth of flavor that was just right.

Sierra Culture notes beer beneficiaries
Since May, Anchor California Lager has been available in six-pack cans and a portion of the proceeds are going toward Empire Mine State Park in Grass Valley. The little-known program stems from a partnership between San Francisco-based Anchor Brewing Co., the California State Parks Foundation and National Parks Conservation Association. Empire Mine Park Association is one of only three groups selected in California for the grant program known as “Anchor California Lager Grants.” The others are the Coastside State Parks Association at Half Moon Bay and Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks.
