A Sacramento man has been arrested on suspicion of hit and run in the death of a pedestrian in Carmichael over the weekend.
The California Highway Patrol said that a 22-year-old man dressed in a black trench coat was walking in the middle of the roadway on Marconi Avenue west of Walnut Avenue about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
The man, who has not been identified, was outside of a crosswalk on a portion of Marconi Avenue that had no street lights, according to a CHP press release.
The pedestrian was hit by a van approaching from the west on Marconi Avenue when he stepped in front of the vehicle. The driver swerved to the right but was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian.
The driver of the van fled the scene. The pedestrian was declared dead from his injuries at a hospital.
On Tuesday, Eric J. Nelson, 24, turned himself into the North Sacramento CHP office. He was booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of hit and run.
