Elk Grove will give its first-ever ceremonial key to the city today to Kyle Larson, days before the NASCAR phenom takes to the track this weekend at Sonoma.

Mayor Gary Davis will present the key to Larson at a 2 p.m. ceremony at Elk Grove City Hall, 8401 Laguna Palms Way. The 21-year-old who grew up in Elk Grove, raced go-karts around town as a child and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School is the first to receive the honor. In a statement, Larson said being the first to receive a key to the city is “really special.”

“I’m proud to call Elk Grove home and proud to represent the city when I race,” he said.

Larson, driving the No. 42 Chevrolet, has quickly made a name as one of the up-and-coming stars in NASCAR. The hardcharging rookie is in the hunt for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year honors and is in the top 10 in the overall NASCAR standings as he heads to Sonoma Raceway for Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350.

Larson also announced last week that he and girlfriend Katelyn Sweet are expecting a child in December.

“We’re proud that Kyle calls Elk Grove his hometown,” Davis said in a statement. “No matter where his career takes him, the door is always open in Elk Grove.”
