Kosher dills straight from the virtual farmer’s garden

The full-page ad in People magazine made the new product look irresistible.

The product: Vlasic Farmer’s Garden kosher dill spears and kosher dill chips.

The text: “For a list of ingredients, just look in the jar.”

The photo: a clear-glass jar of pickle spears, capped with a metal screw top, showing the contents “harvested” from a virtual farmer’s garden, with a backdrop evocative of weathered barn wood. Vlasic’s motto: “The pickle every sandwich loves.”

We bought spears and chips for $4.79 per at a Bel Air store, took them home, refrigerated them and popped them open.

The pickles were crisp and crunchy, juicy and salty, slightly sour and slightly garlicky, ideal for eating straight out of their jars or on most any sandwich.

But... The only other produce in the jars from the “farmer’s garden” were carrot and red bell pepper, and one clove of garlic. They were tasty enough, but we should have given the contents a closer look before we bought the jars. Where was the cauliflower, broccoli, okra, cabbage and/or green beans to keep the pickles company? No capers or leeks? Just what kind of farmer put this thing together, anyway?
