UPDATE: Motorcyclist killed in wrong-way crash on Highway 160

Published: Friday, Jun. 20, 2014 - 6:12 pm

Southbound lanes of Highway 160 in Sacramento were closed for four hours due to an investigation into a crash involving a wrong-way driver that killed a motorcyclist.

Traffic backed up in the southbound lanes from the crash that happened about 10:45 a.m. Friday just north of Northgate Boulevard and the American River, according the California Highway Patrol.

CHP spokesman Officer Chad Hertzell said Elwood Nigh, 86, of Sacramento was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup was eastbound on Richards Boulevard and turned left too soon onto Highway 160, where he ended up traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. When he realized his mistake, he slowed down and hugged the center divider, intending to exit the highway at the next opportunity. As he was going into a blind curve, he collided head-on with a southbound motorcycle traveling in the fast lane.

Hertzell said another southbound vehicle, a Toyota Corolla driven by Benjamin Sun42, of Elk Grove, was traveling behind and to the right the motorcycle, a 2004 Harley FXSTDI. Debris from the motorcycle struck the Corolla, causing minor damage to its front end.

The motorcyclist, a 56-year-old Sacramento man, was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene, Hertzell said. His name has not been released pending notification of family. Hertzell said the man was wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet.

Nigh and Sun were wearing their seat belts, and neither was injured.

The collision is under investigation.

All southbound lanes of Highway 160 were reopened at 2:45 p.m.
