Orangevale woman dies in townhouse fire

Published: Friday, Jun. 20, 2014 - 7:15 pm

A woman was found dead in smoke-filled townhouse in Orangevale this afternoon.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded about 2:30 p.m. to the 9300 block of River Oaks Lane, off Main Street near Madison Avenue, after receiving a report of black smoke coming from the attic vents in a townhouse. Firefighters forced entry and found the two-story home filled with thick, black smoke and extreme heat, according to a fire district news release.

They searched the residence and found a woman in one of the rooms. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released pending notification of family.

A cat also was found dead during the search.

Based on a preliminary analysis, Metro Fire arson investigators determined that the cause of the fire was accidental, but were unable to rule out “improperly discarded smoking material,” according to the news release.

Damage to the townhouse was estimated at $75,000. Adjoining units were not damaged.

Fire officials said no smoke alarms were sounding when crews arrived, and it appeared there were no working smoke alarms in the home. They remind residents to test their smoke alarms and replace batteries at the beginning and end of daylight saving time.
