Motorcyclist killed in Highway 160 crash identified

Published: Saturday, Jun. 21, 2014 - 3:13 pm

A motorcyclist who was killed Friday morning on Highway 160 when a wrong-way driver slammed into him has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

Monty Duane Heath, 56, of Sacramento was struck about 10:45 a.m. by a Dodge Ram pickup that was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, just north of Northgate Boulevard and the American River. Heath was ejected from the motorcycle and died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, Eldwood Nigh, 86, of Sacramento likely will face vehicular manslaughter charges, said CHP spokesman Officer Chad Hertzell.

“No charges have been filed yet, but this is a criminal investigation,” Hertzell said.

Hertzell said Nigh’s was driving east on Richards Boulevard and turned left too soon onto Highway 160, where he ended up traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. When he realized his mistake, he slowed down and hugged the center divider, intending to exit the highway at the next opportunity. As he was going into a blind curve, he collided head-on with a southbound motorcycle traveling in the fast lane.

Hertzell said another southbound vehicle, a Toyota Corolla driven by Benjamin Sun, 42, of Elk Grove, was traveling behind and to the right the motorcycle, a 2004 Harley FXSTDI. Debris from the motorcycle struck the Corolla, causing minor damage to its front end.

Neither Nigh nor Sun was injured.
