Re "Do hidden cracks imperil Bay Bridge?" (Page A1, June 22): I have been in construction for over 35 years, 30 as a superintendent on commercial construction projects. I found myself shaking my head. CalTrans relaxed standards and codes? They knew they were building a bridge that didn't meet codes or plans.

What gives them the right? I am a taxpayer, and I sure as heck didn't pay for a bridge that does not meet codes. Will the inspectors relax the codes for my projects? No, I work in the real world where there are consequences for my actions. In other words if I screwed something up, the company I work for has to pay to fix it. Since CalTrans allowed substandard work to be done, the taxpayer will be stuck paying for the fix.

Also heads would roll in the real world. Will they roll at CalTrans? I doubt it.
