Pagan out for eighth straight game as Giants face another unfamiliar starter

SAN FRANCISCO -- Angel Pagan was out taking swings off a pitching machine hours before the Giants’ game against the Padres on Tuesday. Pagan, wearing a sleeveless orange shirt and his cap backwards, hit left-handed and took mostly easy swings, but appeared to throw in a few more aggressive cuts as well -- a potentially encouraging sign as he continues to battle back inflammation.

Pagan, though, is not in the Giants’ lineup tonight for the eighth consecutive game. And manager Bruce Bochy said this afternoon there is still no decision on whether to use the disabled list for Pagan, who last played June 14 against Colorado.

"He’s getting worked on, getting checked out, so we’ll see where he’s at," Bochy said. "Hopefully it’s going to be real soon, but we’re probably going to have to make a call here the next day or so."

The Giants this season are 36-21 in games Pagan starts and 9-10 when he doesn’t. In the seven games he has missed with the back inflammation, they’re 2-5, and Bochy said on Monday the team has "missed him through this stretch here, because he is so good at making us go."

They could have used any offensive spark Monday night in a 6-0 loss against a pitcher making his major-league debut. Tonight, they’ll see another unfamiliar face in Padres right-hander Jesse Hahn, who’s making his fourth career start.

"I said yesterday, I think the advantage is to the pitcher when the hitters haven’t seen him," Bochy said. "But still, you get all the info and after the first time you face him you should have a pretty good idea, hopefully."

Here’s the Giants’ lineup against Hahn, the same one that was shut out in the opener:

CF Blanco

RF Pence

C Posey

3B Sandoval

1B Morse

LF Colvin

SS Crawford

2B Panik

P Hudson

And the Padres’ lineup against Hudson:

RF Venable

SS Cabrera

LF Smith

3B Headley

C Grandal

1B Goebbert

CF Maybin

2B Amarista

P Hahn

* Brandon Belt also took swings off the pitching machine today and will likely begin his rehab assignment Thursday, Bochy said. Belt will most likely start at High-A San Jose, where he can DH while working his shoulder back into throwing shape.

Bochy said head trainer Dave Groeschner was "a little concerned (Belt’s) hand is strong enough. But he feels good. If all goes well tomorrow, then possibly Thursday."

* Marco Scutaro is scheduled to play his first rehab game tonight in the Arizona League. The plan is for Scutaro to play three innings. The second baseman spent some time with the Giants when they were in Arizona last week playing the Diamondbacks, which gave Bochy a chance to check in with Scutaro.

"I thought he looked pretty good in Arizona taking ground balls, taking a few swings," Bochy said. "He said he’s feeling pretty good. He just wants to try to play through this, get over the hump and see how he handles the game situations."

* Bochy said Ehire Adrianza has a grade one hamstring strain, similar to the injury that put Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list last month. Adrianza was placed on the DL on Monday.

"Could he play? Yeah," Bochy said. "But there’s a lot of risk involved. We didn’t want to be another player short, just couldn’t afford it."

* Placing Adrianda on the DL allowed the Giants to recall Juan Perez for some outfield depth. How thin are they with Pagan in injury limbo? Gregor Blanco has started the last 15 games, first in left field with Michael Morse playing first base, then in center in the absence of Pagan.

* The Giants have not lost a game this season at home when Tim Hudson starts. Hudson, though, is coming off his worst outing of the season, in which he allowed seven runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox. He has already faced the Padres twice this season, allowing four earned runs and 12 hits in 15 2/3 innings.
