Sacramento chef Evan Elsberry is planning another of his popular themed dinners, this time in celebration of his daughter Stephanie’s 30th birthday. He’s calling it, “Dad, What Are You Smoking Now?” Cute, no?
Over the past year or so, Elsberry has matched ethnic cuisines with appropriate wines, resulting in some unusual twists. He sold out his Italian-, French- Spanish- and German-themed wine-pairing dinners, and his customers are still talking about his cheese-centric spread.
Now he’s got his smoked-foods menu ready to go, paired with wines from Frog’s Tooth winery in Murphys ( www.frogstooth.com). It’s planned for 6 p.m. July 14. The cost is $75 per person, with reservations at (916) 452-3896. Evan’s Kitchen restaurant is at 855 57th St., Sacramento, in the Antiques Mall; www.chefevan.com.
The menu reads like this:
First course: Smoked salmon on potato pancake with avocado salsa, fried leeks and crème fraiche, paired with white meritage
Second: smoked duck salad arugula, spring greens, bacon and candied pecans, with pinot grigio
Third: smoked portobello mushroom lasagna, with zinfandel
Fourth: smoked short ribs with smoked jalapeno polenta, with la rana roja
Dessert: smoked peach and vanilla ice cream sandwich with white chocolate chip cookies, with dulcinea
