Police arrest 16-year-old in Pocket area fatal shooting

Published: Friday, Jun. 27, 2014 - 12:05 pm

Sacramento police arrested a 16-year-old male this morning in connection with the March death of Nicole Duarte, 19.

The teen was booked into juvenile hall on charges of murder. Police said he will be charged as an adult.

Officers arrived at a home on the 3800 block of 36th Street in Oak Park either late Thursday night or early Friday morning to serve a warrant and found the teen barricaded in a crawlspace under the home. The teen surrendered after a SWAT team deployed pepper spray. Police have been searching for the 16-year-old since April.

Several other people ran from the home when officers arrived. One person was arrested after throwing a gun in an attempt to hide the weapon. Officers recovered the gun and found the person in a backyard shed and took them into custody for resisting arrest.

Sacramento Police Department public information officer Doug Morse said he did not know whether the search warrant was related to the investigation of Duarte’s murder.

Duarte, of Elk Grove, was shot in the face shortly after midnight on March 15 in the 7200 block of Gloria Drive. The police were called after she knocked on the door of a neighbor for help. Fire department personnel transported her to the hospital, where she died on March 17. Sacramento police said she was shot after an altercation with someone she knew. The suspect was believed to have fled on foot.
