Good morning. Here’s what you need to know today:
Heat is on: A high-pressure system building across the state will push temperatures in Sacramento to 98 degrees today and 104 degrees by Monday , according to the National Weather Service. “We’re looking at a fairly rapid warm-up,” said Karl Swanberg, weather service forecaster. “Peak of the heat looks to be Monday. It is above average, but certainly not unusual.”
Gemily’s story: For much of the last two years, Gemily West has been largely silent about what she has endured as the sole survivor of a hit-and-run crash that killed her boyfriend and four dogs. Now that the driver is on his way to prison, she felt ready to tell her story. Also see a photo gallery.
Mr. Stauskas goes to Sacramento: Nik Stauskas, the Kings’ first-round draft choice, was introduced to Sacramento on Saturday during a series of community functions. The Bee’s Ailene Voisin details the background of the 20-year-old native of Mississauga, Ontario, and how he will help the Kings.
Meet concludes: The USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships culminate today at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium. Finals in a total of 15 men’s and women’s events will be contested. See The Bee’s photo gallery.
Music in the park: Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers will perform in a free blues/swing concert at 6 p.m. today in Sacramento’s Curtis Park.
